Please briefly introduce yourself.


我叫宋瑀,加拿大籍,从初中开始就一直在加拿大生活,本科就读于多伦多大学工业工程系。我对工程心理和人因以及用户方向有强烈兴趣,同时也想多了解国内的大学生活、丰富人生经验,所以抓住了清华大学IMAP这个机会,在2024年顺利毕业。

I'm Song Yu, a Canadian citizen who has been living in Canada since middle school. I studied industrial engineering at the University of Toronto for my undergraduate degree. With a strong interest in engineering psychology, human factors, and user-oriented design, I took the opportunity to study at Tsinghua University's IMAP program to learn more about university life in China and enrich my experiences, and graduated this summer.


Q2 你的论文主题是什么,你主要进行了哪些研究?

What is the topic of your thesis, and what research did you conduct?


我的论文主题是气味和消费者心理学,主要测试了文化和性别因素对消费者香气体验和购买欲的影响。三项研究分别是香气体验测评,气味与产品的多感官体验测评和气味相关能力的测试。

My thesis focuses on the impact of cultural and gender factors on consumer olfactory experiences and purchasing intentions, with three studies conducted: an olfactory experience evaluation, a multi-sensory evaluation of odors and products, and a test of odor-related abilities.


Q3 为何你选择心理学作为你的研究生专业?

Why did you choose psychology as your postgraduate major?


我本科是工业工程的人因方向,与用户有很深的关联,为了更好地了解用户心理、人们行为背后的动机等,选择了应用心理学。

I studied industrial engineering with a human factors focus in my undergraduate studies, which has a strong connection to users. To better comprehend user psychology and motivations behind behaviors, I chose to study applied psychology.


Q4 你是如何选定研究题目的?在这个过程中,你获得了什么重要的经验或教训?

How did you determine your research topic? What important lessons or experiences did you gain in this process?


因为家庭的影响,我对气味有基础知识和强烈兴趣,在导师的支持和指导下确定了与气味和多感官体验有关的题目。我的经验是需要选一个喜欢的题目,这样设计和进行实验、读文献写论文的时候都有动力,也更容易创新。还有需要有自己的想法,总结好需要讨论的点再和老师开会,把组会变成效率高且对自己有意义的学习。


值得一提的是,在学习和研究过程中,我也得到了工业工程系饶培伦教授的指导,这也是IMAP项目中提供的关于交叉学科支持的特色。


Because of my family's influence, I possess a strong knowledge foundation and deep interest in scents. With the guidance and support of my mentor, I have chosen a topic that explores scents and multisensory experiences. From my experience, selecting a topic of personal interest provides motivation for designing experiments, conducting research, reading literature, and writing the thesis. It also facilitates innovation when one has their own ideas. Moreover, it is crucial to outline the points you wish to discuss with your teacher prior to meetings in order to make group sessions efficient and meaningful learning experiences.


It is worth mentioning that during the process of study and research, I also received guidance from Professor Rao Peilun in the Department of Industrial Engineering, which highlights the interdisciplinary support provided by the IMAP project.

Q5 当你面临学业压力时,你通常如何应对?

How do you usually cope when facing research pressure?


有压力时我主要会和实验室的师兄师姐们倾诉,师兄师姐们会分享他们学习生活上的经验。或者和朋友室友们聚餐放松。

When I feel stressed, I mainly seek support from senior peers in the lab who share their studying and living experiences. Alternatively, I relax by having dinner with friends and roommates.


Q6 能否分享一个在清华园中让你印象特别深刻的经历?

Can you share a particularly memorable experience in Tsinghua University?


2023年校庆我有幸参加了北体育馆新冰场的开幕表演,两个月的时间和花滑社团的同学们一起编舞排练,最终成功演出是一件特别且有意义的事,让我很有成就感。

In 2023, I had the honor of participating in the opening performance of the new ice rink at the North Gymnasium during our university's anniversary celebration. It was a special and meaningful experience to spend two months working with the figure skating club members to choreograph and practice the performance, which brought immense fulfillment.


Q7 你对自己未来的职业或研究有什么规划?

What are your plans for your future career or research?


我计划参在芳疗行业或与香气产品有关的行业发展。

I plan to develop my career in the aromatherapy industry or in a field related to fragrance products.


Q8 对于即将加入IMAP项目的同学,你有什么建议?

What advice do you have for students who are about to join the IMAP program?


希望同学们找到自己感兴趣的论文研究方向,同时享受校园里丰富的活动、体验北京的生活、参与不同的课程或实验室项目增强自己的实践能力,让几年的硕士生活有所收获。

I hope that students will find an interesting research topic and enjoy campus activities, and at the same time enjoy the rich campus activities, experience life in Beijing, participate in different courses or laboratory projects to enhance their practical skills, making the most of their Master's studies over the next few years.
