Overall Introduction: The Social Sciences Program includes Tsinghua University's School of Social Sciences and Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, covering undergraduate majors in sociology, economics, psychology, political science and administration, international politics (including international affairs and global governance direction), English (including world literature and culture experimental class), Japanese, and other undergraduate majors. Social sciences aim to inherit and develop human civilization, understand and explore the operating principles of human society, and predict and guide the development and progress of human society. In the establishment and development process of modern Chinese social sciences, Tsinghua University has played an irreplaceable leading role. Liang Qichao, Zhao Yuanren, Fei Xiaotong, Qian Duansheng, Xiao Gongquan, Chen Daisun, Pan Guangdan... many founders of Chinese social sciences have taught or studied in various departments of Tsinghua social sciences, making outstanding contributions to the development of Chinese social sciences. Currently, the faculty teams of Tsinghua's related disciplines possess a group of first-class scholars with major influence both domestically and internationally, with strong research and teaching capabilities, providing high-quality faculty teams and good learning environments for students who aspire to become "academic masters, industry talents, and pillars of governance" who promote the development of our country and even human society.
Training Features and Advantages: The Social Sciences Program upholds the academic tradition of "integration of Chinese and Western, connection of ancient and modern, interpenetration of liberal arts and sciences, comprehensive innovation," advocating the use of scientific methods to explore political, economic, and social phenomena of human society, leading and promoting the formation of new theories and new methods of social sciences based on Chinese experience, providing new ideas and new solutions for addressing major needs of national governance and major challenges of social and economic development. Students entering this program will experience one year of general platform learning and three years of cross-disciplinary learning within colleges and departments. Through systematic learning and solid training, students will possess the ability to extract key information from complex social and economic phenomena and form their own reasonable judgments, understand the origins and developments of major phenomena in human social economy, and master theories and methods for analyzing social and economic phenomena using modern social science thinking approaches. We hope students possess deep humanistic care, can express their thinking processes and arguments in an organized manner, and have strong bilingual reading and communication abilities. The program invites senior professors and scholars at the forefront of various disciplines to teach platform courses and professional courses, with the teaching process focusing on students' value formation, comprehensive ability cultivation, and systematic knowledge structure formation. Diversified teaching forms mainly consisting of small class teaching and seminar-style courses are conducive to deeper exchanges between teachers and students. The flexible design of teaching models allows students to have greater freedom and autonomy in the learning process. Internationalized training environments and learning experiences, rich and diverse minor degree choices, and comprehensive and precisely guided mentoring systems provide students with deeper developmental foundations, broader international perspectives, and comprehensive ability qualities.
Major Confirmation Plan: Through college entrance examination unified enrollment, students are confirmed to the School of Social Sciences and Department of Foreign Languages, completing college and department distribution in the second semester of freshman year; starting from sophomore year, students follow the training plans of various majors and choose professional course learning according to personal interests; before the end of junior year, students determine the major for their final graduation degree. Foreign language major recommended students follow relevant policies of the Ministry of Education. International Politics (International Affairs and Global Governance Direction) does not accept international students.
